Getting Real About Life, about Love, and about God

God of All Creation

I don't know about the weather where you are at but where I am it is beautiful. I have decided that I am a summer person. I like to feel the heat of the sun. I like the warmth of the rays as they fall on my skin. I like to wear shorts and I love baseball-the official game of summer.

As I was driving on this beautiful day I was reminded of a time in college when I had to do free writing in a liturature class. My professor told us that she didn't want us to be writing about God because she didn't belive in God and didn't want to have to read about it. I talked to her after class and shared how I wanted to be respectful of her but I was not sure that I could right about whatever is on my mind and not mention God. I shared with her my feelings about my relationship with God and she told me that it would be ok if I mentioned God from time to time but if it got to be too much she would let me know and then I would have to stop. I kid you not, the first free writing assignment we were asked to write for ten minutes finishing the statement, "When I look at the sunrise I...".

Well. I could not help but think about how there must be a God. When I look out upon God's creation and I take in the beauty of creation I can't help but relize that there is a God. The earth declares His glory and His magnificents.

Today, I stand in awe of God as I marvel at what he has created.

Take some time to enjoy the day and all the beauty that God has placed around you.

Love today.

A prayer

Dear Lord,

I need you today.
I need your presence to fill me.
Change my heart to be more like yours.
Change my character to be more like yours.
Teach me to deal with the frustrations and the disappointments of my day like you.
Teach me to handle my emotions like you would.
Forgive me for the times that I fall short of you.
Forgive me when I misrepresent your love.
Fill me with your Spirit.
Fill me with your Love.
Help me to lean hard into you.
Help me to offer grace and forgiveness.
I need you to be with me to change, teach, forgive, fill and help me today.
Give me this day my daily bread.
In Jesus name, AMEN

Love today.

Video 2 - Confirmation Class

What a blessing. This last week we had Confirmation Sunday and 6 people made public professions of their faith. Baptisms and commitments were made to follow Jesus with our lives. What a blessing. What a special moment in their lives.

Public profession of our faith. Have you done that today. Have you done anything publicly that declared that you are following Jesus with your life? Have you done anything that others could see that professed that your heart belongs to Jesus.

Every day we are to make public professions of our faith. We are to love others like Jesus did. We are to see others and treat others like Jesus. These are public professions of our faith. We are to declare to the world through our actions that we are trusting Jesus and following him as the Lord of our life and when necessary we profess it with words. What does it mean to follow Jesus? What does it mean to be a member of the Church?

Video 1- God of this City Trenton, MO

Here is the video that we shared in church this past Sunday. It was the first time I have tried to make a music video. As I thought about what God has, is and will do through the people pf Dockery I kept hearing this song. As I thought about us, "Living the love of Jesus, Connecting the Unconnected and Growing on our relationship with Christ," all I could think is that greater things are yet to come and greater things are still to be done. I hope you enjoy it.

I Love You

There are three words that we sometimes have trouble saying with enough frequency. Three words that we all long, deep down, to hear from the people that we care about. We long to hear the words "I love you." We can pretend that we are tough. Or we can act like we are just not that "gooshie and mooshie" but, deep down, under neath all the stuff that we have used bury the emotion is that desire to be loved and to hear those words. "I love you."

I love you.
I love you my friends.
I love you my family.
I love you my wife.
I love you my children.
I love you my church family.
I love you that read this blog.
I love you that don't. (I pray someone gets this message to you)
I love you all.

I think the biggest regret that I have discovered in talking with families when they lose a love one is that they didn't tell each other that they loved them enough. They didn't regret something they had done or the lose of time together as much as they regretted not saying I love you more. Take some time today and tell people that you love them. Don't be afraid to do it or think it is too "mooshie or gooshie." Take some time to listen for the voice of God saying those words to you. Thank God for the loved ones in your life and express your love today.

Love today.

When You have Done Everything then Stand

"Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints." Ephesians 6:11-18

Did you read that? I love the way this passage speaks to us about doing the things that help us to stand firm in the Lord. But it also remind us that we have to stand. There are times that we will need to trust in the truth of God's word and the power of the Holy Spirit. We will need to stand in the face of difficulty and hold on tightly to Christ. When we have done everything we then need to stand. We need to prepare for the storm when it is not raining and we need to stand when the storm comes. Storms of life happen and Christ is there to stand with us when those times come. Stand.

Enough

"Your always enough for me"

This is a line from the song "Always Enough" by Casting Crowns. I heard it this morning and was thinking about just how true this is. God is always enough. He is all that we need.

Sometimes we think that we really need other stuff. Sometimes we fool ourselves into thinking that if we have enough other stuff like money, or happiness, or health than we are safe, secure, or protected. But the truth is God is all that we need. God is enough. God is our safety. God is our security. God is our protection. When the wheels fall off of life and our money is gone, we are not happy anymore, and our health is fleeting this is when we will discover that God truly is enough.

I am still praying that God will reveal a way for me to help people understand and know this truth before they have to be in the place that Jesus is all that they are left with. Because it is said "that when Jesus is all that we are left with that is when we discover that Jesus is all that we need." We need to live every moment in this truth.

Hear the truth today. "God is more than enough."

I know that I have shared similar thoughts. Today I felt like someone needed to be reminded. Maybe it is me? Maybe it is you? God loves you and he is more than enough for you.

Love today.

Doug

Thanks for Your Prayers

Thanks for praying. My step mom came through her surgery well and is now recovering. Please continue to pray for her. I am truly grateful for your prayers. I am grateful that you would spend time placing our situation before God. I am grateful that for a moment as you turned to God you were also thinking of us. I am grateful that you interceded and petitioned God on our behalf.

Prayer is powerful. It connects us to God and each other. God cares. God hears. God Acts. Prayer makes us more aware of these realities.

The other morning I received a text form my friend Pastor Paul in Kenya. He asked for prayers because his children did not have food. I prayed that God would provide for their needs. I prayed specifically that God would give them food. My children prayed that Gd would meet the needs of Paul and his family as they went to school. I received a text later that morning that said, "Praise God, someone brought them by some food."

Pastor Paul when he heard about my mothers surgery said that he was going to fast and pray for her on the day of her surgery. He called me and prayed with me over the phone as my mother went into surgery. I prayed with Tom my mothers pastor. I prayed with my family and many people all around the world connected to God and to each other through the power of prayer. This is a way that I have been reminded of the power and the connection of prayer. I have been reminded again of how we are connected as we carry one another into the presence of God through prayer. I am reminded again of how grateful that I am that God cares and others care. I am reminded again of how grateful I am that we can talk to God and God listens.

When I say thank you for your prayers I hope you understand just how grateful I am. I am grateful for all the work that is done through prayer. The work done by God. The work of God done in and through those who are the subject of prayer as well as the work God done in and through those that pray. Prayer is an expression of love. May we all learn to pray without ceasing.

Love today.

Waiting Room

Today is day spent waiting. My stepmother is having surgery this morning and they tell us it will take some time. The family is gathered along with many other families in similar situations in the surgery waiting room. People are talking and trying to keep there thoughts occupied with something other than the reason that they are at the hospital. All the while it is what is on our minds.

As I set in the waiting room I am reminded of the words of the scriptures that say, "They who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength they shall mount up on wings as eagles," and "Be still and know that I am God." I think about Jesus words of "don't be afraid" and "fear not for I am with you." I think of his words "Peace, I give to you. I do not give as the world gives. My peace I give you."

What are you waiting on today? Let's wait on the Lord.

Love today.

Playing catch up

It seems that I have been really busy lately. God is doing lots in my life and in the church. It seems that it has been hard for me to get to the blog and post. Sorry about that. I have exciting news coming very soon about what God is doing through my connection with Pastor Paul in Kenya. I also have exciting things happening here in Trenton at Dockery Chapel. After several days I finally got the mothers day video from church uploaded and I will share it today.

God is good all the time and All the time God is good. AS you watch the video say a prayer for my stepmother who is having surgery on Thursday. Thanks for all that you do for the sake of Christ.

Love today.

Running With God

I may be crazy but I have excepted a challenge to participate in the Pirates Plunder 50/50 Biathlon. That is a fancy way if saying that I am trying to go 50 miles on foot and 50 miles on a piece of exercise equipment in the next two weeks at the local fitness center. The college in Trenton's mascot is the Pirates (that explains the "Pirates Plunder"). This means I am trying to do 100 miles of exercise in 14 days. I have started running 5 miles each morning. I have learned to really love running. What I like about it is that I don't have to think about running. My body kind of goes on auto pilot and if I can keep from telling my self to stop running than my body just keeps running. It is kind of a mind over matter thing.

My favorite thing to do is focus on God. It is great time to pray. It is a great time to take my mind to a place that I can connect with God and listen for God to speak to me. It really is a chance to run with God. That is what happened this morning. As I ran around the track at the local high school this morning I could hear the birds singing. The weather was beautiful and I got to a place that I could hear his still small voice as I ran. God is walking with us or running with us everyday. We just have to focus on him. I did that this morning and was reminded of just how wonderful and amazing God is. I gained insight about things that are coming up in my life and about what God is calling me to. And I marveled in his awesome creation.

Take some time to "run" with God or walk. Recognize he is with you and at work in your life. You will be glad you did.

Love today.

Doug
