No longer I that Live
I heard a song on the radio this morning as I was driving the kids to school. I have heard the song before. However, this morning as I was listening my mind was just racing with scripture and thoughts and ideas that I think I am suppose to share today. The song is written by country music singer Toby Keith. I believe that it is Paul Coleman whose version plays on Christian radio. The clip is his version and the lyrics follow.
If I Was Jesus, I'd have some real long hair
A robe and some sandals, is exactly what I'd wear
I'd be the guy at the party, turnin' water to wine
Yeah me and my disciples, we'd have a real good time.
Ooh and I'd lay my life down for you (woooooh)
And I show you who's the boss (woooooh)
I'd forgive you and adore you
While I was hangin' on your cross
If I Was Jesus.
I'd have some friends that were poor
I'd run around with the wrong crowd, man I'd never be bored
Then I'd heal me a blind man, get myself crucified
By politicians and preachers, who got somethin' to hide.
Ooh and I'd lay my life down for you (woooooh)
And I show you who's the boss (woooooh)
I'd forgive you and adore you
While I was hangin' on your cross
If I Was Jesus.
If I Was Jesus, I'd come back from the dead
And I'd walk on some water, just to mess with your head
I know your dark little secrets, I'd look you right in the face
And I'd tell you I love you, with Amazing Grace.
Ooh and I'd lay my life down for you (woooooh)
And I show you who's the boss (woooooh)
I'd forgive you and adore you
While I was hangin' on your cross
If I Was Jesus.
If I Was Jesus.
What I could not help but think about as I listened to this song with the kids this mornings was that the scriptures say, "It is no longer I that live, but Christ that lives in me." I thought about how Jesus says "now that I have done this to you, now you should go an do likewise."
I though about how some people will only see the Jesus that is within you and me. Some peoples understanding of Jesus and his love is taken from what they learn from the Jesus that we share with them. I am not talking as much about how well we can quote scripture or recall the stories of Jesus that we read in the Bible. I am talking about the way that we love, forgive, judge & care. I am speaking about the how people that we associate with, the things that we do, our love and our grace should reflect that it is Jesus that lives in us. More accurately spoken, they reflect the degree to which Christ is living in us.
How does our love reflect God's love?
How does our forgiveness reflect God's forgiveness?
How does our care for the poor, the sick, those in need reflect Jesus in us?
How do the people that we are willing to associate ourselves with reflect the Jesus that is in us.
John the Baptist describes our Christian live best when he said, "I must become less and He must become more."
God loves you and me just the way that we are, as the song says, "He looks us right in the face and tells us I love you with amazing Grace." And God wants to make us more like Jesus in our love and our character. God wants to share that amazing love, grace and forgiveness with the whole world through you and me. The only Jesus some of the people that we encounter today will ever see is the Jesus in us. Let them see Jesus.
Love today.
